Marching into a new month, because well…it’s March!
We wanted to start this month’s newsletter by saying THANK YOU to everyone who joined us to celebrate the launch of our new publication 🎉. What a fantastic evening of community, design, and overall awesomeness. Thanks to everyone that purchased a copy and have supported us in so many ways. We appreciate you, and it is because of you that we have the drive to do what we do.
Special thanks to the Chicago Graphic Design Club team for all of your time, enthusiasm, and help to make this happen. Thank you to Ray and the American Legion Tattler Post 973 for hosting us in your beautiful space. It was a blast.
COMING UP
Thursday, March 7
6 pm – 7 pm
Virtual Conversation + Presentation
Join us this Thursday, March 7th, for a conversation with Rick Valicenti during a virtual evening of sharing and storytelling.
Broadcasting from his basement studio in Toronto, Rick will be open to any topic of conversation and is open to be promoted by your questions or topics. He does promise to share some seminal works from his recent and olde archive.
As a self-proclaimed pack-rat, Rick has collected some 20th century design objects, correspondence from colleagues, and things he made and is making. We will receive a virtual tour of his modest (almost) working studio, but most of all, we will have time for a dedicated conversation with Rick.
This is going to be a great conversation and a one of a kind chance to ask Rick your questions. Register Now!
Faculty - Issue 1
Many of you now have had a chance to delve into the pages of Faculty. We would love to hear what you think. If you haven’t ordered a copy, this vibrant work featuring Chicago voices and design is available and shipping to your mailboxes. Order a copy and join in the conversation.
Thank you for supporting us
Each purchase made through our store helps fund our programming and offerings. Thanks for all the support thus far. If you have gotten merch, make sure to tag us on social media to be featured.
Underscore
Are you keeping up with the latest episodes of Underscore?
Episode 47 featured guest Rick Valcenti. In this episode, Valcenti walks us through his creative process and the methods through which he stays inspired to continue to create and use graphic design as a means of expression and communication.
Episode 48 was with James Langford and Larry Tchogninou of the Chicago-based studio Points of Sail. In this episode, they discuss designing everything from concrete boats to storefronts, Dafont, Larry's 3 Practices theory, graphic design not having to obey the laws of gravity, play as a means of creative inspiration, and much more.
Mu Radio
Music is an important part of the creative process. So we launched a program called Mu Radio, built for and with our community. The program exists as weekly music slots where designers share curated playlists of the music they enjoy. Want to join?
You can listen to the latest mixes here.
First Fridays on Discord
We wanted to thank everyone that has come to our First Fridays chats. We have had 2 so far and it has been fun to share what we are working on, music we like, and cool websites we have found. It is a fun and casual place to unwind and talk about anything. Just pop into the 🥗-First-Friday Video Channel in our Discord. The next one will be Friday April 5th at 12pm.
Many of you have asked who printed Faculty. M & G Graphics on Chicago’s south side are the magicians behind the printing of this publication. Their expertise and knowledge of making our project look, smell, and feel great is because of them. Shoutout to Angie and John Weiss. We recommend them for your printing projects. Make sure and tell them the CGDC sent you.
love this vibe!
