What is happening in May
A field trip to the library, outdoor social hours, and thoughtful conversations.
Warmer weather. Happy hearts.
We’re embracing Chicago’s warmer weather and looking forward to a social summer of programming, design, and community. This past April, we hosted our first social hour of the season. We met at Dark Matter – Star Lounge and spent the evening talking and making new friends. We’ll share our next meet-up soon on Instagram.
Our latest initiative is to build a directory of design studios in the Chicagoland area, which aims to amplify and promote creative practices and disciplines.
This directory will be managed by the Chicago Graphic Design Club and highlight studios of different sizes, services, mediums, and more. We expect to launch in late Spring/early Summer.
Learning from Mother Design
This past month, we also welcomed our friends from New York, Mother Design, to join us to speak about their work, process, and how they’re having fun through design while pushing the envelope and taking risks.

Back to Basics
Head over to our website to explore our new Back to Basics series, co-authored by our good friend Sean Fermoyle. It’s a collection of thoughts on all things design professionalism. We are covering the basics of portfolio creation, resumes, job applications, etcetera. You know, the fun stuff…
Say hello to our newest team member, Alexis Gonzalez. Here’s a few more things about her.
What drew you to the Chicago Graphic Design Club?
I was drawn by how the Chicago Graphic Design Club brought empathy, amiability, and discovery to one of their collaborative in-person events with Design B&B.
What are you involved in with the club?
I’m involved in organizing social casual events, designing social media posts, and encouraging students to join the club. Happy to help the club in any way, shape, and form.
What inspired you to become a graphic designer?
Unconsciously, my mom, as a kid, I always sat down to draw next to her as she was creating. Taking my first Intro to Computer Art class catapulted me into loving the world of graphic design.
What are you currently reading and listening to?
I just finished Sandra Cisneros's book A House of My Own. She’s an incredible and amusing Latina writer. I’m currently listening to Rey Pila, The Cranberries, Zoé, Tierra Whack, and Colde on repeat.
What does community mean to you?
Community means fostering a safe space of love and belonging for a group of people.
